PREFACE
SENSORING OBJECT
The CSVPA China 2024 graduation exhibition ” Sensoring Object” consists of two parts: online space and physical space. It showcases excellent student works from four major fields: 3D Design, Fashion Design, Graphic and Illustration Design, and Fine Art. Students examine objects as the theme, exploring their extension and metaphysical significance whilst using this as a medium to build connections with the surrounding world – designing living spaces, weaving real or fictional narratives, exploring aesthetic qualities in form, reflecting on the instrumental attributes and dominant relationships of objects and many more. Through their creative practice, they have reshaped the carrying capacity and connotation of things as well as activating people’s new perception of things.
Our CSVPA China Art and Design curriculum is committed to promoting a non-linear and open creative practice, cultivating students’ independent research, critical thinking, and personalized expression abilities. Through heuristic education, students acquire methods to read and understand the surrounding world. During teaching practice, there is a symbiotic relationship between things and concepts. When we are sorting out creative ideas (artistic concepts), objects as concepts or themes are an important fulcrum: analyzing, thinking, and discussing, establishing associations with human history, social forms, personal experiences, and even some delicate aesthetic feelings. When we start extracting the expression language of art and design, the texture and cultural attributes of objects will provide guidance, stimulate the creator’s inner discovery, and help them find the ideal expression language and formal structure. Our teaching elucidates the concept that when ideas are transformed into a sensory material form or sublimated into a work, they are also reshaping our ideas.
The works fully reflect the teaching pursuit: students turn the collected cans into exterior facades of buildings, proposing a concept of consumption-discard-urban sustainability to society; a clothing design work with dazzling color arrangement as the visual order, reflecting on the phenomenon of fetishism in the consumer society, its design processing feature is to blur the boundary between the body and the product; Zine, with its unique form, features an overturned flower pot, a chair, and an empty birdcage from left to right, allowing people to interpret the story of humans and birds from a silent perspective; taking inspiration from the custom of hiding baby teeth, it constructs a multi-layered narrative between objects and myths, and achieves brand design of individuals and myths. Through student works, we not only see the creative achievements guided by teaching philosophy, but also read about the sincere and full inner world and social responsibility of young students from their works. To the viewers who see the formal charm, concepts and thoughts revealed in these works, why don “t we spend a bit more of our time to feel and reflect with our full care and respect towards these charming pieces of works?
